The things that actually go wrong, and how to get past them.

Installing Cappture

Two ways, and Homebrew is the easier one:

  • Homebrew — run brew install --cask yusufdiallo1/tap/cappture. The cask clears the quarantine flag, so the app opens on the first double-click.
  • The DMG — download it here, open it, and drag Cappture to Applications. See the next section before you launch it.

Cappture needs macOS 14 Sonoma or newer on Apple silicon. The depth modes and screen recording use frameworks that do not exist earlier, so there is no older build.

“Cappture can’t be opened”

If you installed the DMG, macOS will refuse the first launch. This is Gatekeeper doing its job on anything downloaded from the web, not a sign that something is wrong with the app.

  • Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  • Scroll to the bottom. There is a line about Cappture being blocked, with an Open Anyway button.
  • Click it, then confirm. You only do this once.

Installing with Homebrew skips all of this, which is why we recommend it.

Camera, microphone and screen recording

macOS asks for each of these the first time you use the feature that needs it. If you said no and want to change your mind, they live in System Settings → Privacy & Security:

  • Camera — for every mode except screen recording.
  • Microphone — for video, and for audio on a screen recording.
  • Screen & System Audio Recording — for screen recording. macOS makes you quit and reopen the app after granting this one.
  • Photos — so captures can be saved to your library.

A permission you decline only disables that feature. The rest of the app carries on.

Where your captures go

Two places, both on your Mac, and never anywhere else:

  • The app’s own library, which you can scroll inside Cappture. ⌘⇧O opens the folder in Finder.
  • Your Photos library, as you shoot, if you granted the Photos permission.

Deleted something by accident? Recently Deleted holds it for thirty days with a Put Back button, exactly as Photos does.

Your licence and your Macs

One licence covers five Macs. Paste the key into Cappture → Licence and that Mac is activated.

  • Lost your key? It is on your licence page — sign in with the email you bought with and we will send a link.
  • Replaced a Mac? Deactivate the old one from that same page and the seat frees up immediately.
  • Reinstalled macOS? That does not use a second seat. The same Mac is recognised as the same Mac.
  • Offline? The licence is checked about once a week, and the app keeps working for thirty days if it cannot reach us.

Keyboard shortcuts

The whole camera is reachable from the keyboard — Space takes the shot, ⌘G toggles the grid, ⌘R refreshes the library. The full list is on the home page, and every one of them is in the menu bar too.
